The Reserved Symphony

Anvi’s eyes darted down the road, anxiety growing with each passing second. She was already twenty minutes late. Two buses had already come and gone, each crammed to the brim with passengers hanging precariously from the footboards, leaving no room for anyone else. She bit her lip. An auto would be faster, but she couldn’t justify the extra money today. Five more minutes crawled by until, finally, the 401R bus lumbered into view, still crowded but at least with a bit of breathing room. She made a dash, boarding with a quick flash of her bus pass.

Inside, she found herself pressed between a mother clutching her toddler and a group of students loudly sharing jokes. She shifted uncomfortably, feeling the jostle of people trying to make space, elbows nudging her side and shoulders brushing past her. The air was thick with the mixed scents of perfume, sweat, and street food from nearby stalls. But Anvi held her ground, clutching the metal railing as the bus lurched forward, her mind already racing ahead.

She quickly glanced at the time, calculating that she might just make it for the start of her first class—Mechanics. A smile tugged at her lips. Mr. Verma was her favorite professor, his way of teaching both inspiring and easy to understand. But just as she breathed a sigh of relief, her phone buzzed.

It was her friend, messaging, “Hey, when are you reaching? If you’re late, someone might grab your spot!”

Anvi’s heart skipped a beat. That spot, her special seat near the window in the lecture hall, was more than just a place to sit. It was where she could gaze at the gardens, lost in thought, and it was right next to Aryan. Her mind immediately filled with his image—those calm, thoughtful eyes, his quiet intelligence. Aryan was everything she admired: smart, driven, and, yes, incredibly handsome. Yet, he barely talked to anyone except his close friends from high school, and even then, only occasionally.

The bus ride felt endless, every bump in the road stretching the minutes. But finally, after what felt like forever, she arrived at her college. She ran down the corridor, heart racing, weaving between clusters of students. She paused at the doorway of her lecture hall, catching her breath, and then, relief washed over her.

There it was, her seat, still empty.

With a smile, she hurried over and slipped into the spot, her heart fluttering when she glanced to her left. Aryan was already there, calmly arranging his books, his usual serious expression softened by a hint of a smile as he looked up.

“Hi, Aryan,” she managed to say, her voice catching slightly.

He gave a slight nod, lifting his bag off the seat beside him and placing it on the floor. For a moment, she couldn’t help but wonder—did he put it there to save her seat?

As the class settled, her thoughts drifted back to a conversation she’d overheard weeks before. Aryan had been standing in the hallway with a few of his friends from school, their laughter carrying over the crowd. She hadn’t meant to listen in, but the mention of his name caught her attention, and her heart raced as she lingered just close enough to hear.

One of his friends, Raghav, nudged Aryan with a smirk, “So, tell us, Aryan, who's this mysterious girl you've been crushing on?” His voice was full of teasing, but there was a genuine curiosity in it that made her heart pound. She held her breath, hoping—just hoping—that they might be talking about her.

Aryan only shook his head with a quiet laugh, clearly reluctant to play along, but another friend chimed in, “Come on, man, don’t keep us in suspense. You’ve been distracted in class lately. Don’t think we haven’t noticed!”

Her cheeks flushed as she listened, feeling a nervous thrill in her stomach. She wished it was her, that maybe, just maybe, Aryan’s quiet glances and small smiles were meant for her alone. Could he really be interested in her? Her mind raced, daring to imagine it.

But Aryan only shrugged, his expression composed. “You guys are making things up,” he replied, but there was a hint of a smile that he couldn’t quite hide.

Raghav laughed, clearly unfazed. “Oh, sure, like we haven’t seen you saving a seat next to you. And I’m betting it’s not just for any random person,” he teased, elbowing him in the side.

Anvi’s heart skipped a beat. Could it really be her seat he was saving? Her mind replayed every look, every nod, every word they’d exchanged over the past few months. She tried to focus, but her thoughts were a happy blur.

“Just tell us her name, Aryan,” one of them pressed with a laugh. “Or should we just keep guessing?”

Aryan rolled his eyes and chuckled, but this time, he gave them a more serious look. “Look, if there was someone, don’t you think you’d be the last to know?” he replied, though his voice held a hint of playfulness.

His friends let it go, moving on to another topic, but Anvi couldn’t stop wondering. Was it really her? That look she’d caught, the way he sometimes turned to smile at her when they exchanged a few words—it had to mean something, right?

Back in the present, her heart fluttered as she stole a quick glance at him. She couldn’t shake the hope that one day, he’d turn to her and confess it was her all along.

Her friend Ganesh, who was sitting directly behind Aryan, leaned over with a mischievous grin. “Hey, Aryan, what are you doing after today’s lab?” he asked, clearly suppressing a smirk as he shot a look at Anvi.

Aryan shrugged, his tone indifferent but polite. “Nothing much. Probably finishing the HMT assignment in the lab.”

Ganesh’s grin widened as he nudged, “We were thinking of going to Chacha’s Bakery. You interested in joining?”

Anvi could feel her cheeks heat up as Ganesh’s words hung in the air. He knew exactly how nervous she felt around Aryan, and he was doing this just to tease her. She shot him a glare, but he only winked back, unfazed.

Aryan chuckled slightly, turning back to answer. “I’ll check and let you know,” he replied, his gaze shifting briefly to Anvi.

Their eyes met, and suddenly the world seemed to fall away. The noise of the classroom, the sound of shuffling papers—all faded into the background. His eyes held hers with an intensity that made her feel as though he could see straight through her, peeling back every layer to her heart. She could hardly breathe. There was a warmth in his gaze, something unspoken yet unmistakable, that sent a rush of emotions spiraling through her. In that fleeting moment, she could feel herself melting under his gaze, a thousand butterflies erupting within her.

And then, just as suddenly, the moment broke as Mr. Verma entered the room. Anvi quickly looked down, her cheeks flushed, still feeling the lingering warmth of Aryan’s gaze. They greeted their professor in unison, shuffling to settle down, but her mind kept drifting back to that look, wondering if he had felt it too.

Then, as the room quieted and Mr. Verma began his lecture, Aryan leaned slightly toward her, his voice barely a whisper, yet each word ringing clear. “You don’t need to rush anymore,” he murmured, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “I’ll save this spot for you… always.”

Anvi’s heart skipped a beat, her breath catching as she tried to process his words. Was he…was he saying what she thought he was? She dared a glance at him, her cheeks flaming, but he only returned her look with a knowing smile, a silent promise reflected in his eyes.

In that instant, she knew this wasn’t just a fleeting crush—this was something deeper, something she hadn’t dared to dream of before.
